24th January is 'officially' the most depressing day of the year, so Jarvis tries to play some uplifting songs. On This Day, the first Apple Mac computer went on sale. Jarvis reads the story Mirror from the anthology Sum. On the phone from Paris, pianist Chilly Gonzales talks about representing the hands of Serge Gainsbourg in the biopic Gainsbourg: Vie héroïque. Jarvis asks whether you can get to know a person by learning to imitate how they played. Gonzales suggests that French people clap differently to Anglo audiences, to a beat he feels is somehow childlike. Jarvis sheds light on that with an interesting psychological theory about rhythm. And Jarvis is cheered to hear of more pets named after him. Birthdays: Neil Diamond, Klaus Nomi (Is He Any Good?), John Belushi, Jools Holland, Natasia Kinski, Ray Stevens and Vic Reeves. Valete: Kate McGarrigle.
