The Spring Tune

Spring is in the air!  Jarvis talks about gambolling lambs, the BBC Seasons record returns with an appropriate track, and Jarvis reads The Spring Tune by Moomin author Tove Jansson.  On This Day: the abolition of slavery bill was passed, so we hear a black power record.  John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged their first Bed-In in Amsterdam: Lennon talks about the idea behind it - 'all we were saying was give peace a chance'.  Concorde made its first supersonic flight: Barbara Harmer, the first female Concorde pilot, describes her experiences of flying the famous jet.  Venice was founded today in AD 421.  Plus, there's a clip of Bruce Springsteen's keynote speech from last week's South-by-Southwest conference, featuring his contrary advice for young musicians.  And the listeners pick their favourite relaxing tune.  Birthdays: Elton John (a fan of The Rolling Stones) and Tom Wilson.

Fashion designer and singer-songwriter Pam Hogg sits in for Jarvis.  She shares anecdotes about her rock experiences, plus memories of Diamanda Galás, Andre Williams, Killing Joke, Bobby Gillespie and David Thomas.  She also plays tracks to mark Mother's Day, St Patrick's Day and Clare Grogan's birthday.  Have your eyeliner and hairspray at the ready for her mix of punk, post-punk, alternative and psychobilly.

BBC 6 Music's 10th Birthday Party

It's BBC 6 Music's 10th birthday today - welcome to the party!  We begin with Procol Harum meditating on the meaning of life, then do some vigorous warm-up exercises with Her Levi's.  Sham 69 create drama at the bar, then we clear our heads with some fun tongue-twisters.  The party revs up, there's a chance for a sexy slow dance, then we wind down in the chillout zone.  Jarvis closes by explaining that the party is for the listeners because it's thanks to our dedication that 6 Music has made it to its 10th birthday.  Birthdays: Douglas Adams (on predicting the future), Rupert Murdoch (on the power of the papers), Bobby McFerrin, Nina Hagen (preaching), Thora Birch and Harvey Mandel.

Jeremy Deller has an exhibition at The Hayward Gallery and has produced a record by a busker named Chuck.
